Born August 16 1980 in the town of Mitford in Pennsylvania to Ed and Heidi Carlton, music and art were the main focuses of her childhood. At the age of 2, she was able to figure out the notes of "It's A Small World" right after visiting Disneyland. Since then, seeing her natural talent, she was exposed to different classical composers, from Eric Satie, to Mozart, to Debussey. notice With her mom as her first piano teacher, she was able to make her first composition at the age of 8. At 9 she fell in love with ballet. With this, her early teenage life was spent in New York, studying at the School of American Ballet.

At the threshold of becoming a professional ballet dancer, she felt the pressure, and she felt lost. Everything seemed to fall apart. At 17, she started writing songs again. She found solace in the decrepit piano in the kitchen of her dorm at Lincoln Center. It was then when she started putting lyrics to her piano playing. After graduating, she got an apartment with a friend, became a waitress, and at the same time she also started playing gigs in downtown New York.

A year later, she signed up with Interscope, Geffen, A&M Records, to come up with her debut album “Be not Nobody”. In February 2002, her debut single, “A Thousand Miles”, hit the charts with MTV airing its video. She has performed on Rosie O'Donnell and TRL. Her album was released April of that year she has been mentioned in Rolling Stone magazine as one of ten artists to watch out for in 2002.
