The band was conceived in 1983 in a living room in Hollywood. Originally, there were three, Cliff Martinez (Drummer), Michael Balzary, AKA flea,(Bass Guitarist) and Jack Sherman(lead guitarist).
In 1984, they produced their first self-titled album thanks to the wonderful people EMI records, obviously known as 'Red Hot Chili Peppers'. This included songs like “Get Up and Jump”, and “True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes”. From here, They produced another album, and by 1985, Freaky Styley was released. This album produces songs like “Catholic School Girls Rule”, “Jungle Man” and “Hollywood”.
Between 1985 and 1987, Sherman and Martinez had left the band due to drug problems which made way for Jack Irons (drummer) and Hillel Slovak (guitarist). In 1987, they created the “Uplift Mofo Party Plan” which included classics like “Fight Like a Brave”, “Me and My Friends” and “Backwoods”. But on June 25th 1987, Hillel Slovak died of a Heroin overdose which forced drummer Jack Irons to quit. Despite these circumstances the Red Hot Chili Peppers would still move on.
This tragedy would bring in John Frusciante and Chad Smith to the picture. John Frusciante brought a new and totally splendid taste of funk to the band. He would harmonize Flea's bass with such charisma and the deep symbolic lyrics that only Keidis could invoke. In 1989 EMI records brought to the public a evolutionary brand of music. The album was called 'Mothers Milk', which included sounds like, 'Knock Me down', 'Magic Johnson' and 'Higher Ground'.
For the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the best was still to come. With help from superstar Rick Rubin, and Warner Brothers, their new producers. In 1991 they produced “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”. If you've heard this album, you'd understand that no human word could describe the brilliance of this album. It includes tracks like, 'Power of the Equality', 'Give it Away' and one of their best pieces ever, Under the bridge, which was written about Anthony's deep drug problem in his younger years.
From here, John Frusciante went off the rails a bit. He was taken over by heroin and left the Red Hot Chili Peppers to start a solo album. During this time, John went through an extremely rough time, going through a period of wanting and trying to kill himself. But through music, he found his way out. On the other hand, The Red Hot Chili Peppers were still alive, merely lying dormant. Along came Dave Navarro. In 1995 they brought the world 'One Hot Minute'.
In 1998, the rehabilitated John Frusciante returns to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He brought back his awesome skills to compliment Flea, Anthony and good old Chad, who was getting on a bit. They got together to produce another masterpiece, Californication, released in 1999. This album was just hit after hit, with fifteen tracks of pure Red Hot Chili Peppers funkiness. A must have album. Songs, such as 'Scar Tissue, Around the World, Otherside and The Savior, which was about John's troubled times. From here they move on to a soft-rock-funk style, with songs such as By the Way and The Zephyr song with By the Way, released in 2002.
Their latest compilation would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers Greatest Hits album, released in 2003.
