Originally nown as Kara's Flowers, Singer/guitarist Adam Levine, guitarist Jesse Carmichael, bass player Mickey Madden and drummer Ryan Dusick were highschool teens (except for Dusick who had already graduated by then) making a CD with legendary producer Rob Cavallo (producer for the likes of Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Michelle Branch). They were living every teen musicians dream.

Unfortunately their first album turned out to be a disappointment. They decided to go off to college, and figure things out. Dusick and Madden stayed to study at UCLA, while Levine and Carmichael headed for the State University of New York. Levine started changing his singing style, and Carmichael started playing keyboards. They added a taste of Groove, Funk, and R&B to their Rock&Roll. Not only that, they added a fifth member, guitarist James Valentine. Equipped with new style, new sound and a new guitarist, Kara’s Flowers now became Maroon5 and was attracting attention from the record companies.

New York based independent label Octone Records signed the group, and in 2001 Maroon 5 started working with producer Matt Wallace (The Replacements, Faith No More, Blues Traveler). What came up was their debut album, Songs About Jane, which was released in June 2002.

The album is about Levine's ex-girlfriend (what’s her name, you ask?), filled with funky grooves and soulful melodies. It is sure to become a classic pop/rock album. The songs come from real life experiences which you can hear from the emotions contained in the songs. It has surpassed the 1 million albums sold mark thanks to their first hit, “Harder to Breathe”, a single released in the summer of 2002.

This is one album I highly recommend!
